I've looked at this module before and thought about where and when I could introduce this into training within my organisation. Having been subject to an incident recently based on someone else's poor behaviour, it was a timely refresher to look back over the content to identify if there was anything new or significant I could take from it.

This is a great fun activity with a lot of important points that can be highlighted in relation to listening skills, assumptions and our own unconscious biases. You can even see examples of 'group think' if you use online 'polling software' as you can observe people changing their answers as the activity progresses.
It's easy to run and even if people know what to expect (which they generally won't) the exercise still works to show how we make decisions on information we think we heard - but didn't!
Works well as an icebreaker or as a wider session on attention to detail or listening skills and also any other skill that relies on listening closely and not making assumptions such as coaching.
Highly recommended.

Group Size: This module can be used with groups of between 7 and 12 participants.
Useful For: Staff at all levels
You'll Need: • To prepare a whiteboard before the session, following the guidance provided. We recommend using Miro.
Notes: Recommended for groups of 7 or more, though you might be able to use it with slightly smaller teams initially separated into two distinct groups. If you can, find out enough from your participants before they attend to be able to put them into three or four groups of about equal size. We suggest grouping your participants by any of these: • Gender. • Where they were born (For example, North or South, City, Town or Rural). • Level of education. • Age. Do not group participants by ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation etc.
This exercise shamelessly borrows from and is inspired by this brilliant film, directed by Asger Leth.

I loved this course. The discussions which followed within the group were invaluable as it really got them thinking about the wider society and what we can do to impact and influence positive change!

Notes: This exercise uses an imaginative method for raising awareness of prejudice and really gets participants thinking. It’s important to use this activity in a training environment where ground rules of showing respect for individual opinions and experiences have been established. The content is potentially sensitive, and it is important that the trainer monitors conversations during the group work to pick up on any intrusive questioning of minorities within the group, which could mirror the unhelpful behaviour described in the imaginary scenario.

Well, what a reaction I get every time I play this! A very powerful 3 minutes voice over session. I have written a Dignity@Work course and needed something to open the session with to grab their attention and say 'This is why we are here today'.
I often get people saying, I am not racist and am very inclusive and it does not affect me in any way.
The content makes people feel like they are the ones that are the minority, the different one for a change. The people in the session are called food feeders and are set apart from the rest of the community who don't eat food but absorb the nutrients through skin sprays and soaps. The food feeders are considered odd, inferior, strange and unnatural. If they are seen eating they are laughed at, spat at, ridiculed and bullied. They are challenged to change to be 'normal', the same as Nutritos.
This really hits the spot and has a huge impact. People get quite emotional at their ignorance of the situation that many people in minority groups go through every day.
Highly recommend this 3 minute gem.

This is a thought provoking exercise that works well to illustrate an individual's unconscious bias. We use the remote delivery version at the beginning of a 2 hour virtual module as a soft intro to what can be a very sensitive topic and what we've found is that, in creating the shopping list and then identifying the objects, participants quickly start to acknowledge how their own assumptions have influenced them, which opens them up to understanding where these come from and ultimately raising awareness. It's possible to do this without a polling tool as well, if there isn't one available. Typing the number into chat or calling it out works as well (depending on numbers). If you're looking for a virtual module to raise awareness that Unconscious Bias exists in all of us, this is a great one to use.
