Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: We hear these words a lot, but what do they really mean and how can you ensure the words become more than just words that are sprinkled around like confetti in a sandstorm? How can you ensure teams and organisations become places where people from all backgrounds can thrive and achieve their full potential?
We’ve a proud history in championing equality, diversion and inclusion. Our acclaimed icebreaker,
Witches of Glum is endorsed by Show Racism the Red Card and has been used in schools throughout the UK to help young people understand how stereotypes can cause us to make assumptions about individuals and groups of individuals, where stereotypes come from and how ingrained they can be. But the learning isn’t restricted to children, we guarantee this amazing activity will work with the people in your organisations, wherever they are, and open some interesting conversations about the links between pre-conceived assumptions, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours.
A really powerful activity for getting people thinking about inclusion is
Land of the Nutritos. It shines a light on the experiences of minority groups without putting any individual or group ‘under the spotlight’ and opens the door to really meaningful conversations. But perhaps, more importantly, as our own experiences have shown, it leads to people voluntarily sharing their own personal experiences and feeling it’s safe to do so. It's an activity that can have a deep and lasting impact on people, and a positive impact on their relationships with others.
Experiential activities like Witches of Glum and Land of the Nutritos (and we have a lot more) are important because they provide safe ways to explore what can be difficult topics for some. And they are a powerful tool when you need to overcome resistance to learning too.
But it’s also important that people understand what equality, diversity and inclusion mean in a practical sense and the impact equality legislation has in the workplace. That’s where activities like ‘
A Level Playing Field’ (a board game that tests participants understanding of equal opportunities legislation) and our e-learning module,
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion come into their own.
Like all our SCORM compliant e-learning modules,
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion includes animation, activities and an accompanying worksheet that participants are required to complete as they progress through the module. This is a key difference with our e-learning modules that prevents them being just tick-box training that people can click through without engagement or thought.
Equality, diversity and inclusion can play a major role in ensuring organisations succeed. Research has shown that organisations that truly embrace people from different backgrounds and needs are more likely to have engaged, motivated and committed employees and as a result be more innovative and competitive as well as able to communicate effectively with a broader customer base.
So, ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion are much more than words isn’t just good for the people who work for you, it’s good for organisations too.
