I used this ice-breaker with a newly formed project group that was going to work on organisational culture, values, and behaviours.
It was the perfect activity, with the team making lots of assumptions about who an alien was due to their behaviour, body language, etc.
I helped the team open up the topic of assumptions and trust and linked nicely into the day ahead.
I liked it as it was easy to set up - no resources needed and gave me so much information that we could refer to throughout the day.
At the end of the day, the delegates all stated that they loved the activity - so it's one that I will definitely be using again.

We used this activity when our team had grown very quickly and there were signs of there being a few cracks. It led to a facilitated conversation about misinterpreting others and how its easy to make assumptions based on nothing. A really good activity to open up a really tough conversation

I downloaded the Alien Invasion activity for a team building event with one of our departments, to embed the need for trust within the team and to build effectiveness in times of change. It went down really well, we went from a group of 20 people who had raised trust, honesty, transparency, and communication as key values/requirements within the team, to a roomful of suspicious, judgemental and distrusting individuals that were certain of who the “Aliens” were. There were a lot of laughs along the way but the realisation that they were all human was classic, and definitely a light bulb moment for applying all the values raised previously and not jumping on the assumption wagon. An excellent and fun activity that helped land the aims of the day. I also got some great feedback about the event from the department Director who also attended. Thanks for providing great content.

I used this activity last week with a fairly new team to help them draw out their strengths and identify diversity within the team.
The activity went really well with the 3 teams each creating an in-depth 3-course menu capturing the teams behaviours, strengths and characteristics. One team really got into this activity adding in matching wines from around the globe and a muse-buse.
It was great to how similar the menu's were for example they all had spicy dishes as the team could challenge each other quite a bit and this came out through the menu's allowing us as a collective to really open up this topic not just as an ice-breaker but throughout the workshop.
The activity was fun and encourage lots of conversation and helped to open up some of the challenges that the team currently had with their communication styles.
Highly recommend as it was not only fun but value adding which was great.

I used 'course introduction' with a group on a departmental awayday. This really focused participants on the rationale for the day and allowed the groundrules to be discussed in a way that wouldn't have happened otherwise. The 'expectations of each other' allowed discussion of acceptable and desirable behaviour to be clearly stated in a department where several staff members are overbearing and dominatiing in such meetings usually. The main content of the day was more fruitful once this had happened.

Used this as an icebreaker in a team building training session with 11 people. It was very good at getting the team working together, off their seats, focused on the training ahead and was a quick exercise. It was a large group and it highlighted the need to listen as well as being creative. I might split a large group into 2 teams just to ensure everyone can participate. I also printed the cards onto A3 paper as the bigger the better.

I recently used this exercise at a large team away day. It was easy to facilitate and manage the exercise and worked especially well after lunch as an energiser. It gave the participants an opportunity to have some light-hearted fun and after the exercise, they were able to review how they communicated with each other. We also discussed how they could have completed the exercise more quickly and effectively which gave some interesting points for consideration. It was a great, fun game that enabled the group who were previously working quite autonomously, to work together to achieve a shared goal. This translated very well into the work they do on a daily basis.

I was asked to deliver a 90-minute session as an introduction to a team day. The participants were a fairly new team of IT trainers and the aims of the session were to encourage openness, help them to get to know each other and have fun. They wanted something creative, energetic and different. Happy half hour was one of 3 activities that I used. [The exercise] helped to create a visually interesting room, and some intrigue! I adapted the activity slightly to fit the needs of my group; I said that I would be asking them to make a cocktail of themselves … My participants started the activity quite cautiously – I think that the exercise can push some people out of their comfort zones a little, which I see as a benefit. Soon the participants really got into the swing of the activity and created some fantastic cocktails. The teams’ cocktails are now displayed for all to see and act as a visual reminder of the day and the outcomes. The activity was a great success, allowing participants to reveal information about themselves and learn more about each other. It was fun, creative and energetic but also has potential to allow for more serious outcomes. It is also easy to adapt for different objectives. I’m already thinking of different ways to use the activity and more courses to use it in. I would definitely recommend this activity to fellow trainers.

I recently ran this activity for the first time and it received great feedback. I would recommend reading the instructions carefully and laminating the cards beforehand so that they can be used again.
It's a short, simple activity, however when used as an icebreaker it got colleagues interacting straight away and working as a team.

This is a really fun and quick icebreaker/energiser. I love this game. It is a great icebreaker session for team building. I make up a
quiz sheet with everybody's name on it and pictures giving everyone a clue of
some of the answers, eg. If someone has a favourite group like Boyzone; I add a
pic of Boyzone, if someones favourite hobby is collecting frogs; I add a pic
of frogs. This adds a bit of colour and makes them inquisitive. Everyone
gets a people bingo sheet to mark their answers. We have had some hilarious and some surprising answers. It has changed the relationships as they have new stuff to talk about instead of just work related subjects. It has also made
people realise that there is another interesting side to the people they work
with.

When I am out and about training, I often have to improvise with the name plates, and they end up as a piece of card folded in half. However, this is excellent for running this activity. I ask the group to write their name on their name card. Then I ask them to open it out, and on the reverse, to note the answer to 5 questions (keeping them secret from the person sitting next to them). I then pick 5 random questions from the questionnaire (or from my own library) – but I do choose those that require short answers. I collect in the cards, and then read out the 5 answers, leaving the group to guess who it is. When they guess correctly I hand back the name plate to the individual. It is great to run this exercise with a team who work together, as they are often amazed at what they find out about each other. I also find that it opens their mind up to the learning, as they have already identified that they don’t know their colleagues as much as they thought. Questions that work particularly well are those that go back in time, such as favourite subject at school, and first car/record. An added benefit for the trainer in running this exercise…it is a great way of remembering people!

I bought some of the jigsaws from the trainers market for this, having experimented with 'home-made' pictures I cut up myself. Either way it is a fun way to get people moving round and in different groups. I enjoyed listening to one person looking for other pieces of an alien (it's a frog!) Nice way to get people to think about assumptions and the need for listening skills, or to think about the need for different team roles in a successful team.

I used Personal Item - Sharing Information as an ice breaker with an existing team of people and I thought this would be a great way to approach introductions. It worked really well and everyone found out things about each other that wouldn't usually be shared and because attention was focused on the object rather themselves even the quietest delegates seemed comfortable. We recently used this icebreaker to commence regular operations meetings. We wanted a short exercise to highlight the importance of working together as this had been an ongoing issue with the operations team.
We did change the exercise slightly and used miniature pots of play-doh instead of bendy people. the task was exactly the same but the individual could have either 1 or 2 miniature pots but if it was 2 they had to mix the pots together to make 1 piece. The paper had to have a min of 1 cm gap between the table and the paper all around. The play-doh could be molded into any shape.
The exercise worked really well and the point was very much made that the team needed to work together. We did have one person who wanted to continue on their own but the team sorted them out. Everyone took their play-doh away to use as a destresser. Would highly recommend this exercise for highlighting that working together achieves results.

I used this on a management development programme in a workshop on 'Building the Team'. As the workshop was about teams, it didn't take them long to work it out. It did, however, clearly highlight the main point that when working together we can often achieve more. Plus, it was fun and certainly broke the ice!
I will definitely use it again.

I used this one at our HR team away day as an icebreaker. The Magno Men generate a lot of conversation even before you provide the brief and the exercise itself is very simple to run. I was worried that the group would figure the task out in seconds but actually it took them just over five minutes. Lots of opportunity to debrief which we didn’t need on this occasion but I would definitely use this again in the content of team working skills. The only problem I have with this exercise is that the Magno Men are quite expensive so people would have to hand them back at the end.

I run courses in communication for multi-disciplinary cancer teams. Tried the Hair-ee Mango Men exercise not long ago with a tricky team. One surgeon persisted in trying ... alone and only after 10 minutes of failure attempted to do the task with one other member of the group. Provided me as the facilitator with an instant appraisal of the problems likely to be encountered over the next 2 days ! Thank you.

A great exercise to use towards the end of a programme (as a means of allowing participants to demonstrate the right behaviours, rather than as an exercise to catch them out).
I have found that allowing participants 20-30 minutes planning is worth doing and gives plenty of opportunity to observe behaviours for feedback.
Don't be surprised if they find a different solution to the one in the materials. My groups have found a solution that involves people moving backwards sometimes but this isn't prohibited in the rules. Splitting the group into two teams is good (1-6 and 7-12)as they often come up with different solutions and then have to agree on one.
It is also worth having post-its of different colours available for them to model and mouse mats (£1 each from Ikea) make excellent stepping stones.
